Raise achievement/progress in Reading/Writing/Maths for all children

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

We have a large number of vulnerable groups including Pupil Premium, white working class boys, EAL and SEN.

Historically, these groups are low achieving, and have low aspirations and a lack of focus for learning.

What actions did you take?

• Half-termly Pupil Progress Meetings were held to scrutinise data for every child in R/W/M (3 year group teachers & SLT (HoS, Deputy-Assessment, Deputy-Inclusion, ExecHead))

• Gaps were identified for interventions and reviewed weekly - R/W/M (Pupil Premium Funding).

• We focused on arithmetic/mental maths strategies

• Individuals were mentored around their behaviour, attitudes to learning and writing (HoS/ExecHT)

• Constructive dialogue was shared for work scrutiny/book monitoring (SLT/ teachers)

• Home reading checks were carried out daily for year 6 (HoS)

• SLT encouraged pupils to read more challenging books based on their interests, which encouraged more buy-in for reading

• Weekly reading points/awards

• We held an Aspirations Day where a range of jobs were represented, showing links between reading/writing/maths learning and real jobs/careers

• Real life maths problems were used to support reasoning

What were the outcomes?

We observed significant improvement in progress and achievement for all children. They developed more positive attitudes to learning, confidence, self-esteem and aspirations.
