School-led networks to strengthen teaching of D&T and Engineering
STEMNET’s volunteer STEM Ambassadors have supported new classroom approaches and activities to develop teacher knowledge, bringing subjects to life with real-world contexts. It aims to increase attainment and encourage London’s next generation of engineers, designers and technologists.
In phase one of the project STEMNET formed and trained a network of eight lead schools. These schools implemented two sample STEM Ambassador D&T activities, then created and delivered activities of their own. In phase two, the eight lead schools recruited three local schools to create their Network and trained and supported them to implement two activities in their own school, supported by STEM Ambassadors.
The project evaluation found improvements in confidence in teaching D&T, subject knowledge, confidence in integrating people from the world of work into their teaching, as well as the ability to talk to pupils about the use of D&T in different careers.
