New River Teaching Alliance

Enhancing the subject knowledge of teachers to deliver inspirational teaching to students in Haringey.

Raising Aspirations and Improving Access to Top Universities

The 'Raising Aspirations and Improving Access to Top Universities' (RATU) project was set up to raise levels of aspiration and achievement amongst 16-18 year olds in the New River Teaching Alliance, in North London.

The project sought to address under-representation at top universities of students from families with significant deprivation factors and those from ethnic minority groups.

Activities put in place over a two-year period included a CPD programme for subject-specialist teachers in 6 subject areas lead by The Prince's Teaching Institute. It aimed to improve and deepen teachers’ subject knowledge. Participating teachers also benefitted from subject-specialist networking and knowledge sharing events.

The project featured a subject-specialist coaching and mentoring programme led by The Brilliant Club. Focussing on KS5 students, it also included activities for KS4 students in preparation for their transition to KS5. The project aimed to develop a clear and confident understanding within participating students, of the range of higher education options available, and the benefits that these provide.

There was an increased percentage overall of A/B grades at A-level by participating students.
