Bank nurses
Nurses who work for an agency and are hired by specialist hospitals or GPs when they are understaffed.
C
C2, D and E socio-economic groups
Socioeconomic classification used by the ONS, covering:
- C2: skilled manual occupations
- D: semi and unskilled manual occupations
- E: unemployed and lowest grade occupations.
Cultural and creative industries
An umbrella term for a wide range of sub-sectors within the arts.
D
Demographic groups
The categorisation of a population into distinct groups, usually defined by personal characteristics or location.
Disability
A mental or physical impairment that has a big and long-term negative effect on your ability to lead activities in everyday life. A disability can be seen (visible) or hidden (invisible).
Discrimination
Unequal or unjust treatment based on a personal characteristic, such as age, sexual orientation or ethnicity.
Diverse workforce
A workforce that has representation at all levels from different demographic groups and protected characteristics.

EDI
Equality (or equity), diversity and inclusion.
EDI shadow board
An EDI shadow board is a group of non-executive – usually younger or more junior – employees that work alongside senior leaders on strategic EDI initiatives.

Employee resource group.
EqIA
Equality impact assessment.

GDPR
General Data Protection Regulation.
GLA
Greater London Authority.
GP

Gross value added.
Gender pay gap
A measure of the difference in the average (median) hourly earnings of men and women.
Green skills or sector
Environmental organisations such as those concerned with:
- recycling and air pollution
- renewable energies
- green spaces, such as urban greening
- green travel
- low carbon industries, such as alternative fuels and carbon finance.

Health Education England.
Hospitality
A large sub-section of the services industry that covers food and drink, accommodation, travel and leisure.

ICBs
Integrated Care Boards.
Inclusive workforce
A workforce in which all individuals and groups, regardless of their personal characteristics, feel welcomed, respected and supported.
Intersectional
The way that systems of discrimination based on particular characteristics (such as race, disability and age) overlap to compound inequality.
M
Masking
Masking involves neurodiverse individuals performing socially-accepted, neurotypical behaviours, while hiding their authentic self and neurodiverse characteristics.
Masking can happen consciously or unconsciously. It has negative impacts on a neurodiverse person's wellbeing due to constant self censorship and camouflaging.
Micro-enterprise
A small organisation with fewer than 10 employees.
Minoritised racial group
A group which has been granted less status or authority by societal structures due to their racial identity.
N
NHS
National Health Service.
Net Promoter Score
A measure of people’s experience with a particular industry or organisation. It is a satisfaction benchmark that assesses likelihood of your industry or organisation being recommended (by ‘promoters’) or not recommended (by ‘detractors’).
Neurodiverse
Neurologically atypical. Neurodiverse individuals process information and stimuli differently from the social ‘norm’ or what usually presents in society. This results in behaviours and ways of thinking that are different from what is expected in a neurotypical society.

PCN
Primary Care Networks.
Priority groups
Groups identified as experiencing greater levels of discrimination and inequality, including:
- Black men aged 16-24 and 50+
- Black women
- Pakistani women
- Bangladeshi women
And within these groups, those with disabilities and from the C2, D and E socio-economic groups.
Psychological safety
An environment where issues and concerns can be raised without fear of victimisation or punishment.

Restorative justice
An approach to building relationships that seeks to repair harm.
Ringfencing
Setting aside time for a specific task, initiative or programme.
S
Socially integrated
A society where all groups of people are fully included and feel that they belong.
Systemic barriers
Barriers that exist within society’s institutions.

WIN
Workforce Integration Network.
Workplace culture
The ‘personality’ of a workplace, describing the attitudes, ways of working, leadership and social norms of an organisation.
Z
Zero-tolerance policy
An unwavering commitment to take action against a particular behaviour, typically discriminatory practices or offences.
