About the programme
The Start Ups and Entrepreneurial Support programme is a programme of targeted support to promote entrepreneurship in Haringey, focusing on young people, female entrepreneurs and founders from diverse backgrounds.
The programme consists of a number of projects supporting entrepreneurs in Haringey, including support centred around Global Entrepreneurship Week, a business Growth programme and a migrant and refugee programme.
In action
Between February 2023 and March 2024, the Business Growth programme took place. This programme was co-designed for the specific needs of entrepreneurs and aimed to help businesses integrate into the local business ecosystem, encouraging them to engage in business networking activity.
The programme supported 22 entrepreneurships in Haringey and focussed on young people, female entrepreneurs and new early-stage businesses from diverse backgrounds to help them reach their high growth potential.
Beneficiaries were provided with specialised training in financial literacy and resilience ('Money, Mind, Metrics') as well as effective communication and sales strategies ('Speak, Sell, Succeed'). Attendees were also helped with ideas for collaboration, business to business opportunities and new product development.
Testimonials
"I was not sure what to expect from the course. I had my doubts that a free course would be of a high standard! (Although, I could not have afforded to invest in a paid course.) In fact, it has greatly exceeded my expectations in that I have vastly gained confidence in knowing the value of my business and in practical knowledge of how to navigate the market through different pricing models and with new skills and tools to keep on top of financial admin."
- Participant one
"It gave me the tools needed to increase the income in my business, as well as how to manage my finances better. I think confidence will grow over time, as I use these tools more and build them into my business."
- Participant two
Solving the challenge
The funding has allowed Haringey to create a bespoke programme for start-up businesses in the borough as previous advice was generic and not tailored to the needs of local businesses. In turn this is helping participants to grow, become more confident, raise their profile and enter new markets.
The funding has allowed council to extend their business support offer to provide:
- one-to-one advice from business experts
- tailor-made action plans
- advice on how to expand and create new jobs
- advice on retaining existing staff
- help to start a new business
- small grants to eligible businesses
- workshops and events to network with other local businesses.
Support for Haringey entrepreneurs continues with a programme supporting migrants, refugees and new settlers into the borough. Haringey will also participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week with a focus on supporting creative entrepreneurs within the borough.
Impact on Londoners
The Business Growth programme had 22 Haringey entrepreneurs follow a six-week training programme with the following benefits:
- 1 business launched
- 5 new local people recruited
- 7 jobs safe guarded
- 8 new products developed
- 9 new B2B collaborations established
- 6 new markets accessed
- 2 new business premises acquired
- small business network set up between the cohort.
