London’s Privacy Register
The Mayor of London's Privacy Register ('Privacy Register') provides greater openness around smart city technologies operating in our public spaces. The Privacy Register is part of the Emerging Technology Charter for London to guide the trialling and use of data gathering smart city technologies, and the Public London Charter which sets out the rights and responsibilities of the users, owners and managers of new public spaces.
When a project is likely to result in a high risk to individuals' privacy, organisations are currently required to undertake a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIAs), a legal obligation to minimise risks identified. A privacy notice is also required when handling personal information, this tells everybody why personal information is being collected, for what purpose, where it is stored, and for how long.
The new London Privacy Register creates a central catalogue of projects that collect personal information in public spaces. By publishing this in one place for the first time, it willenable public transparency and support good practice amongst operators.
Submissions to the register should be undertaken when a trial is launched and/or when a product or service is launched.
Operation
Organisations can submit information via the form below, where it will be held as open data on the London Datastore.
The person submitting this information should have sought permission from the responsible owner / organisation responsible for the DPIA before proposing this information for inclusion on the London Privacy Register.
Londoners can also request the publication of a DPIA/privacy register for smart city technologies operating in the public realm by emailing [email protected]. A request will trigger a communication from the Chief Digital Officer for London to the organisation asking for publication, or reasons for refusal.
