London Research and Policy Partnership
London’s universities contribute a huge amount to the economy generating over £12 billion per year. The wealth of research from these Institutions anchored deep in London’s communities means the Mayor can draw on world class evidence to drive improvements to Londoners lives.
About the Partnership
The London Research and Policy Partnership (LRaPP) is a partnership between the Greater London Authority (GLA), University of London (UoL), Capabilities in Academic Policy Exchange (CAPE), London Higher, the Civic University Network and London Councils.
LRaPP promotes joint working between London government and the academic research community. The partnership is evolving among movements bringing universities and local communities, cities and regions closer together - the ‘civic universities agenda’.
Aims
There are many examples of London's academics and public sector working together. Yet, most of these relationships develop in an ad-hoc way.
To help this, the Partnership is taking a systematic approach through proactive and sustained engagement between the university and government sectors. It aims to harness the strategic capabilities of London’s more than 40 universities with the policy-making expertise of London government to work together for a fairer, greener, more prosperous London for everyone.
The Partnership also draws on academic expertise beyond London, where helpful, and connects with similar research policy partnerships and networks in other cities, regions, and nations.
Actions
Through extensive research into the barriers and solutions to effective research-policy partnerships, the Partnership is now developing a series of services. These include:
- a match-making service connecting researchers and policymakers, secondments for researchers to London government and vice versa
- masterclasses for London researchers and policymakers
- a network for knowledge mobilisers across the city
- and a placement scheme that will give London students direct experience working with policymakers.
