Fourth Plinth Schools Awards rules
- Entry to the competition is only open to children at school in Greater London aged between 5 and 15 on the 1 September 2023. The competition is divided into three age categories: 5-7 years; 8-11 years; and 12-15 years.
- Entry to the competition must be made by a teacher on behalf of a child or group of children from the school at which that teacher is employed and the teacher must ensure that they have the necessary parent/guardian authority before making the entries.
- Entries must be submitted using the official entry form, one form per entry, which is available at www.london.gov.uk/imagination. Any entry not made on the official form will be rejected. The GLA shall not be responsible for late, lost or delayed entries or network computer hardware or software failures of any kind that may delay or restrict entry to the competition.
- All entries should respond directly to the challenge – to design an artwork inspired by the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.
- By completing and submitting the entry form, together with checking the ‘I Agree’ tick box indicates acceptance of these terms and conditions.
- The competition opens for registration and entries from 3 January 2023. The deadline for receiving entries is midnight on Friday 8 March 2024.
- Teachers can upload as many entries as they wish. However, for each entry only one image may be submitted.
- Original artwork can be produced in any material and may be 2D (including digital images) or 3D. However, entries must be in digital form only, in full-colour and saved as JPG, GIF or TIF files to a high resolution but must not exceed 5MB. This may be a digital photograph of a 2D or 3D artwork, a scan of a photograph of the work, a scan of 2D work, or a digital drawing/painting.
- Entries will be judged on their artistic merits (taking into consideration the age categories) and creative responses to the requirement to design an artwork inspired by the Fourth Plinth. The judge will pick a minimum of 39 winners, one winner and one runner up in each of the age categories across all of Greater London, and one winning entry per London borough from all the entries in that borough. Winners will be chosen at the sole opinion of the judge. Entries will be anonymous for judging purposes.
- The judge's decisions will be final and binding in all matters and no correspondence will be entered into. The name of the judge will be made available on the website, www.london.gov.uk/imagination.
- Winning entrants will be notified via their school, using the contact information provided no later than 21 April 2024. If the GLA is unable to contact any winner, or if any prize is not claimed within 28 days of being notified then the winner will be deemed to have forfeited their prize and the GLA reserves the right to determine a new winner for that prize. The first names and (where appropriate) boroughs of winners will be posted on the website from 6 May 2024.
- The winners (and their parents and / or teacher) will be invited to the awards ceremony, which is scheduled to take place on 25 April 2024 but this may be subject to change. Winners will be informed of any alternate date in good time.
- All winners will receive a prize, which will consist of art materials allocated according to the age group of the winners. Different prizes may be awarded for groups winners. There are a minimum of 39 prizes available. There will be no alternative to the prizes.
- The work of the winners of the competition will not be displayed on the Fourth Plinth itself.
- The work of the winners will be collected and photographed, then displayed on exhibition boards at City Hall for a period of up to 6 weeks. Original works should be picked up by winners or their parents / teachers by the awards ceremony at the latest.
- The GLA will not enter into any communication or correspondence regarding winning entries.
- The GLA will not be liable for any loss or damage, however caused, to any entries, and bears no responsibility for incomplete or delayed entries.
- The GLA reserves the right to cancel the competition at any stage if it considers such action necessary, or for reasons beyond the GLA's reasonable control, and the GLA will have no liability to the entrants in respect of any such cancellation.
- By entering the competition, each winning entrant grants the GLA, the competition sponsors and all media partners a irrevocable, perpetual licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, mechanically or electronically on any media worldwide (including the internet) the entrant's winning artwork.
- Winning entrants shall not object to any cropping or other minor alteration of the photographs of their artwork when used outside the remit of this competition.
- By entering the competition the teacher confirms and warrants that the child’s or children’s artwork that has been submitted:
- Is their own original work;
- That all copyright, and any other intellectual property rights in the artwork photograph are vested in the child and they have not assigned, licensed or disposed of or otherwise encumbered any of their rights in the artwork;
- does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any third party in respect of the artwork, and the school will indemnify the GLA against any claims made against the GLA by any third parties in respect of such infringement; and
- By entering the competition the teacher confirms and warrants that they have the permission of those pictured in the artwork(if any) (or, where the artwork pictures any persons under the age of 18, they have obtained the consent of that child's parent or guardian) for the photo to be published and used by the GLA as contemplated by these Rules of Entry.
- There is no charge to enter the competition. However, all materials for the production and submission of artwork, in all forms, must be provided by the schools.
- The promoter is the Greater London Authority, City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, London E16 1ZE (“GLA”).
- The competition and these terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed according to English Law.
