How to create a Local Cultural Infrastructure Plan

Step 1. Gather data

• use the Cultural Infrastructure Map to understand your borough and the data we hold
• add to the map by using local listings and resources and promoting the map locally so the public can add to it. Door to door surveys are also useful in accessing businesses which do not have a public function. Hakathons and workshops are also a useful way of gathering data. Step 2. Interrogate the data, what does it tell you?

• do you have hidden strengths that could be built upon?
• do you have clusters of activity that you were previously unaware of?
• could you build upon these strengths by adding key infrastructure to a cluster?
• are there types of infrastructure that you don’t have in your borough?

Step 3. Undertake a local audit which provides you with more contextual detail about capacity and future risk

• is there existing cultural infrastructure that could be used better, for example community centres that could open on additional days and provide more affordable rehearsal space?
• which organisations are potentially at risk from loosing their premises and may need new premises in the future?
• where might investment be needed to support existing cultural infrastructure to become more sustainable?
