Following the overwhelming popularity of Sir Quentin Blake’s ‘London is Open for Summer’ illustration, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has launched a competition to win one of 20 special edition posters signed by the world-renowned illustrator.
Wrapping up an action-packed summer of events, festivals and celebrations across the capital, the Mayor is calling on everyone to spread the #LondonIsOpen message and answer ‘What did you love about London this Summer?’ via the london.gov.uk website to be in with a chance to win one of the exclusive signed prints.
In addition, the unique posters will go on sale today. Available from London Transport Museum and the Museum of London, as well as on their websites, the posters will cost £10, with all proceeds being donated to Red Cross UK Solidarity Fund, which supports victims of terror attacks in the UK.
The unique illustration by the celebrated illustrator features a number of iconic landmarks including Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Shard. The drawing also includes an eclectic host of characters from Notting Hill dancers to street performers, to represent the vibrancy and open spirit of Londoners.
Sir Quentin Blake started on the illustration as soon as the Mayor put a call out through his #Londonisopen for summer campaign, and wanted to present people of all kinds and backgrounds through his drawing. The image is about positivity and the surprise that awaits visitors to London.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: “Sir Quentin Blake’s illustration has really captured the imagination of Londoners and visitors to our great city, and brought London’s diversity and excitement to life. I’m delighted that we can spread the message even further by giving away these highly-coveted prints and by putting these unique posters up for sale, with the profits going towards the fantastic work of the Red Cross UK Solidarity Fund.
“I have been saying loud and clear - London is open for business, creativity, ideas and open to everyone – and this poster and the way people have responded to it captures that spirit perfectly.”
Mike Adamson, Chief Executive of British Red Cross said: “These posters celebrate some of the many people and places that make London the friendly, open city it is. To have such positive images supporting the Red Cross UK Solidarity Fund is a great way to help people affected by terror attacks in the UK.”

Notes to editors
#LondonIsOpen will show the world that London remains entrepreneurial, international, and full of creativity and possibility, while reassuring the more than one million foreign nationals who live in London that they will always be welcome, and that any form of discrimination will not be tolerated.
The Mayor is urging all Londoners, organisations and businesses to show their support for the #LondonIsOpen message via social media, through other creative ways. The starting idea for the campaign is built around London opening its doors to welcome people in, and will encourage people to use this as a platform for their own contributions.
The #LondonIsOpen campaign launched with a simple creative: Londoners opening their doors. The ‘Doors film’ has received more than 2.3m views and has inspired hundreds of individuals and organisations to create their own version. (See video below)
