Deputy Mayor celebrates Glebe Primary's Healthy Schools London success

Created on
21 November 2018

  • London’s Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, Joanne McCartney, today visited Glebe Primary School in Harrow to see first-hand the work being done to achieve the Mayor’s Healthy Schools London Gold Award status.

  • Glebe Primary School gained their Healthy Schools London Gold Award in recognition of their focus on increasing healthy food choices and improving the dental health of the pupils.

  • The Deputy Mayor saw first-hand the impact this work is having on the school’s pupils as she met with staff and students learning to look after their teeth and growing fruit and vegetables.

  • This school has previously achieved Healthy Schools London Bronze and Silver Awards. Glebe Primary School obtained their Gold Award in March 2018.

  • The Mayor of London is supporting schools in creating healthier environments for their pupils. Healthy Schools London gives Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to school that undertake activities which encourage children to learn about their health, and develop their motivation to make healthy choices.

Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, Joanne McCartney, said: “It’s vital that children are given the tools to look after their physical and mental wellbeing at an early age.

“Whether by putting fruit and veg in lunchboxes, encouraging cycling to school or promoting good dental hygiene, Healthy Schools London empowers children, parents, guardians and teachers to make healthy choices every day.

“The staff and students at Glebe Primary School should be very proud of their hard work in achieving the Gold Award. I hope their success inspires more schools to sign up to Healthy Schools London.”

Background

  • Healthy Schools London is a programme that supports London’s schools to provide an environment and culture that helps their pupils grow up to be healthy happy and learn. With an award scheme sponsored by the Mayor of London, the programme will recognise and celebrate schools that are making a difference for their pupils. The Healthy Schools London programme will support schools as they work towards these awards, with a network of local coordinators, and a range of resources, tools and advice provided through this website and regular workshops for schools.

  • The Silver and Gold Award at Glebe Primary School focused on Healthy Eating and Dental Health, which aimed to:

• Increase from a baseline of 9% (5 lunchboxes) to 50% (25 lunchboxes) the number of lunchboxes including fruit and vegetables.

• A 100% (20 pupils) increase in the targeted group engaging in at least one physical activity club, before, after or during school.
