Deputy Mayor celebrates Park Walk's Healthy Schools London success

Created on
16 January 2019

London’s Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, Joanne McCartney, today visited Park Walk Primary School in Chelsea to see the work being done to improve the health of their pupils and achieve the Mayor’s Healthy Schools London Gold Award status.

Park Walk Primary School has received the Healthy Schools London Gold Award in recognition of their efforts to promote physical activity and enhance students’ emotional wellbeing.

The Deputy Mayor saw the impact this work is having as she met with staff and students enjoying breaktime snacks of fruit and vegetables and taking part in decision making exercises to help build up their confidence.

The Mayor of London is supporting schools in creating healthier environments for their pupils. Healthy Schools London gives Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to schools that undertake activities which encourage children to learn about their health, and develop their motivation to make healthy choices.

Deputy Mayor for Education and Childcare, Joanne McCartney, said: “It is so important that children are given the tools they need to look after both their physical and mental wellbeing from an early age.

“By serving fruit and veg at snack times, offering a wider variety of active games and involving pupils in making decisions about their health, the Healthy Schools London programme empowers children, parents, guardians and teachers to make meaningful and sustainable choices every day.

“The staff and students at Park Walk Primary School should be very proud of their hard work in achieving the Gold Award. I hope their success inspires more schools to sign up to Healthy Schools London.”

Paula Evans, Acting Headteacher, Park Walk Primary’s School said: “Park Walk has worked hard over the past few years to develop the children’s physical and mental wellbeing. We believe that children knowing they have a voice that is heard stands them In good stead for a positive experience at school and beyond.”

Cllr Emma Will, Kensington and Chelsea’s Lead Member for Families, Children and Schools, said: “I’d like to thank Joanne McCartney for coming to Park Walk today. Our schools are determined to support children’s development, including in the vital area of health and wellbeing. Park Walk has worked hard over many years to do this and their Gold award in 2017 was deserved recognition.

“Healthy Schools London is one of a number of initiatives that have helped improve the health of your children and help them achieve the most they can.”
