In its third and final meeting to examine the Mayor’s 2017-18 budget, the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee [1] will tomorrow put questions to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. Topics to be discussed include:
- Whether reduced funding for police officers could put London’s safety at risk
- What TfL could cut to deliver £800 million of annual savings and efficiencies
- Plans for the number of new homes to be delivered each year
- Whether station closures are planned to fund the London Fire Brigade
- The taxpayer paying £8 million a year to move the London Stadium seats
- If an additional £1.2 million is enough to tackle London’s environmental issues
- How the budget might improve the long-term financial sustainability of the GLA Group
The following guests will answer questions:
- Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
- David Bellamy, Mayor’s Chief of Staff
- Martin Clarke, Executive Director of Resources, GLA
- David Gallie, Assistant Director - Group Finance, GLA
The Committee invited representatives from Transport for London and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority to its meeting on 4 January 2017, and from the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, the Metropolitan Police Service, the London Legacy Development Corporation and the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation to its meeting on 5 January 2017 to discuss the 2017-18 budget.
The Committee produced a formal response to the Mayor’s draft budget on 19 December 2016 and it will publish its response to the Mayor’s consultation budget next week, which informs the full Assembly’s debate and vote on the Mayor's proposals in February. The Assembly has the power to amend the total budget requirement for each functional body if a two-thirds majority agree to do so. The Mayor then publishes his Final Budget before the start of the financial year in April.
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 10 January from 10.00am in The Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
