Post-Covid local planning changes – what do they mean?

New housing development
Created on
13 July 2020

COVID-19 has greatly changed local planning decision-making procedures to ensure approvals are kept moving.

Some boroughs, like Merton and Newham, have indicated that they may increase their use of delegated powers to make decisions and the majority of boroughs are making use of virtual planning meetings.

But what do these changes mean, are processes still fair and transparent, and can local people still get involved and raise their opinion?

The Planning and Regeneration Committee will discuss these issues with the following guests:

  • Bethany Cullen, Head of Development Management, London Borough of Camden
  • Victoria Hills, Chief Executive, Royal Town Planning Institute
  • Peter Eversden, Chairman, London Forum of Amenity and Civic Societies
  • James Fennell, Chief Executive, Lichfields

During the second part of the meeting, the Committee will discuss the Secretary of State’s directions to the Mayor to make changes to the draft new London Plan. The guests are:

  • Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor, Planning, Regeneration and Skills
  • Lisa Fairmaner, Interim Head of London Plan & Growth Strategies, GLA

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 14 July at 11:00am.

In line with Government advice, this meeting will take place virtually.

Media and members of the public can watch the meeting live here.
