Will the council tax increase be enough to fill the Met’s budget hole?

Created on
03 January 2018
  • The Mayor is proposing to increase council tax by 5.1 per cent to help fund London’s police and fire services. What does this mean for the Met’s budget?
  • In particular, how many police officers will the Met be able to afford, or does the Met have other plans for the money?
  • How are the Met’s savings programmes progressing?
  • Will its digital policing initiative end up saving or costing money?

In the second of three meetings to examine the Mayor’s 2018/19 budget, the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee [1] will tomorrow first put questions to

representatives from the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) on what the Mayor’s budget means for their plans to deliver new homes and jobs in West London:

Panel 1: from 10am to approximately 10:30am

  • Victoria Hills, Chief Executive Officer, OPDC
  • Doug Wilson, Chief Operating Officer, OPDC
  • David Gallie, Assistant Director, Group Finance, GLA

Members will also put questions to representatives from the Met:

Panel 2: from approximately 10:30 to 12:00pm

  • Sophie Linden, Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, GLA
  • Siobhan Peters, Chief Financial Officer, MOPAC
  • Sir Craig Mackey QPM, Deputy Commissioner, Metropolitan Police Service
  • Lynda McMullan, Director of Finance, Metropolitan Police Service
  • David Gallie, Assistant Director, Group Finance, GLA
