In the 12 months to December 2021, there were 107,277 reports of fraud in the London area – with a total reported loss of £677.1 million [1].
Fraud is recognised as one of the most frequently reported and complex crimes for the police to investigate. It can cause significant distress and financial loss for victims, but it is not currently a crime area considered a priority by the Mayor.
The London Assembly Police and Crime Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the scale of online fraud, how it is dealt with by police and its impact on Londoners.
The guests are:
- Kenny Bowie, Director of Strategy and Policing Oversight, Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime
- Commander Catherine Roper, Central Specialist Crime, Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)
- Detective Superintendent John Roch, Head of Economic Crime, MPS
- John McGeachy, Senior Campaigns Officer, Age UK London
- Assistant Commissioner Pete O’Doherty, City of London Police
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 9 March from 10am, in Rooms G02 – G03 – G04, LFB Headquarters, 169 Union Street, London, SE1 0LL.
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
