In 2012, the Mayor pledged to deliver 250,000 apprenticeships by the end of this Mayoral term– but the latest figures show he is unlikely to achieve this target.[1]
In its summer Budget 2015, the Government announced that it will create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020, funded by a levy on large employers – which could mean the way apprenticeships are delivered in the capital changes significantly.
Is London struggling to create apprenticeships compared with other UK regions? What more could be done to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to take on apprenticeships? And what will the government’s changes mean for London?
The Budget Monitoring Sub-Committee will explore these issues tomorrowwith the following guests:
- Sue Terpilowski OBE, Business Member of the London Enterprise Panel.
- Mark Kleinman, Assistant Director for Economic and Business Policy, Greater London Authority (GLA).
The Committee will then examine the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) business plan, with:
- Victoria Hills, Chief Executive Officer, OPDC.
- Doug Wilson, Chief Finance Officer, OPDC.
And finally, the Committee will hear an update on key financial issues that will affect the 2016-17 GLA Group budget – the last budget of this Mayoralty – with:
- David Gallie, Assistant Director – Group Finance, GLA.
The meeting will take place tomorrow, Wednesday 21 October from 2:30pm in the Chamber, City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).
Media and members of the public are invited to attend.
The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
