Who we are
Quilombo UK is a not-for-profit social marketing agency dedicated to using behaviour change techniques to inspire everyone to “Think Differently” about equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
One of our 2024 projects involved us creating a series of podcasts that provided an intimate look at how escalating costs are affecting everyday lives within our communities. Through detailed interviews with affected residents and supporting organisations, our content exposes the challenges many face due to the cost-of-living crisis.
Amid the growing challenges posed by the cost of living crisis, we undertook a project in collaboration with Kingston Council in 2024. Recognising the need to amplify the voices of affected residents and supporting organisations, we created a series of podcasts to delve into the crisis's far-reaching impacts. This initiative aimed not only to shed light on the struggles but also to drive informed policymaking by sharing these compelling stories.
The project engaged with residents battling the financial strain, exploring their personal experiences and the difficult choices they face daily. Local organisations, vital pillars of community support, also shared their perspectives, offering insights into the increasing reliance on their services and the support they provide to those willing to seek it.
We used podcasts to convey emotions and experiences, while storytelling vividly brought to life the resilience and determination of the Kingston community.

The collected insights revealed stark realities. Residents shared their struggles with economic strain, often forced to choose between heating and eating. The mental health toll of the crisis was evident, with heightened stress and anxiety affecting many lives. Shame emerged as a significant barrier, preventing some from seeking help due to stigma surrounding financial struggles. At the same time, community support services proved to be lifelines, underscoring the importance of collective action during tough times.
Through this project, the team highlighted the resilience of Kingston’s residents and emphasized the critical need for effective support systems and policy interventions.
The impact of our work
We are proud of the overall outcome of our project, the interest our shorts and clips generated, and how we were able to give organisations who provide support a platform to talk about it.
We think that it effectively captured the biggest struggles our community faces and has done a good job of signposting to support and humanising the issue by telling the story of residents and their struggles and challenges.
We believe that participants felt validated, and the wider community gained a deeper understanding of the very real struggles of many residents. We hope that this project has fostered empathy and informed policymakers, driving meaningful change.
The changes we would like to see
We would like to see a change in the way that key community organisations and policy makers signpost the support on offer, recognising that there is still a stigma in asking for help.
We would like to see a greater level of collaboration between different community organisations leading to earlier identification of issues and more people feeling confident and willing to ask for support.
To enable this change, we and our community need:
- new partnerships and collaborations
- networks
- funding.
