Domestic abuse in childhood can have a significant impact on a child’s mental and physical wellbeing, as well as their behaviour. Providing support to children at the earliest opportunity is important to address the trauma and harm caused by the abuse.

Many studies show that children that grow within this environment may internalise their distress and withdraw from other people. They may have a lowered sense of self-worth. Within older children, the affects of the abuse can affect their engagement with school and has been linked to self-harm and alcohol and drug dependency.

Services like the Bambu Project will intervene and help children to understand that the abuse that is taking place is not their fault and they are not to blame.
