Tree-mendous Children Photography exhibition

See photos from a few projects that aim to inspire the next generation to plant, appreciate and love London’s trees. This exhibition is presented by the Mayor and the London Tree Partnership.
Thames Chase Photography Competition exhibition
Thames Chase Forest Centre, Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster Essex, RM14 3NS

This exhibition will showcase the best images of people’s favourite trees in the Thames Chase Community Forest. The closing date for entries is 26 May. Entries will be shown in the Forest Centre during London Tree Week where the public will vote for their favourite.

Reflect on one of London’s oldest mulberry trees and its stories in this special exhibition. Designers Stables and Lucraft use mirrors to create installations so visitors can look deep into the branches of these veteran trees. The black mulberry at Charlton House is thought to be at least 400 years old.

Peckham Tree-sure Hunt - Peckham SE15 4EE
There is a forest of trees in our concrete jungle. Peckham's trees are as big, unique and diverse as we are. Come and discover a tree-sure trove of plants, animals, fun activities and wild facts, all hiding in plain sight! Look out for the distinctive black and white posters across the Peckham Rye Lane area, unlock their QR codes and dive in!
Cycle trail: Bromley and Croydon’s ancient yews - Digital trail
This 11 mile cycle route takes in a few of the ancient yews of Bromley. It starts at Hayes station. It is accessible for the whole family but on-road experience is necessary.

Walking trail: A Marvellous Mulberry Monastery Walk - Digital trail
Starting point: Blackfriars Station, North Entrance, EC4V 4DD
This walk takes in mulberry trees, young and old, on the sites of former monasteries in the City of London.

A tree trail created by Trees for Cities & the City of London Festival. It provides a fascinating and fun guide to some of the most interesting trees and heritage sites in the City of London.
Hainault Lodge nature trail - PDF
Redbridge, IG6 3HP
This former 18th-century hunting lodge on top of Hog Hill is now a Local Nature Reserve. The grounds are surrounded by mature woodland including some massive oak and hornbeam pollards.
Claybury Park nature trail - PDF IG8 8RD
Claybury Park is on the south-facing slopes of a ridge east of Woodford Bridge. The varied site includes parkland, ancient woodland, patches of scrub, an orchard, a few ponds and open rides.
Syon Park Pocahontas Tree Trail
Find the trees Pocahontas would have known as a girl, tree trail in the gardens of Syon Park as part of ‘Year of Pocahontas’, she lived in Brentford for a while.

Using the TimeOut and Trees for Cities 2010 publication this is a map and app guide to The Great Trees of London.
12 Trees for every borough - Tree Trails TiCL app and web guides
In 2016 TiCL asked tree officers in all 33 London boroughs to tell us about 12 interesting local trees. The resulting TiCL Map and app guide gives a fascinating overview of London’s most interesting trees chosen as by tree professionals. Rangers Dan and Sarah invite you to join them for proper coffee round the campfire and an urban tree safari. You’ll gain skills in identifying common broadleaved trees and learn how they’re cared for on this idyllic woodland ramble, on their tree ID skills, or just enjoy this hidden oasis at its dappled and shady best.

Stalking Trees in Highgate Woods, 10:30am - 12:30pm FULLY BOOKED
Meet at Highgate Tube, N6.
Join The Woodland Trust to walk and stalk through the Ancient Wood and VIP trees in Highgate Wood. This walk is led by Peter Coles, urban nature writer and photographer, with the support of urban ecologist Andrew Stuck. The whole family will enjoy this chance to discover the old Hornbeam coppices and learn about their history.

Trees of Bloomsbury Walk, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm
Meet at the steps of the Goodenough Club, 23 Mecklenburgh Square, London, WC1N 2AD.
The Association of Bloomsbury Squares and Gardens together with Val Martin Memorial Walks are pleased to invite you to this free guided tree walk. Come and see some of the area’s splendid and unusual trees. View the New Zealand border in the beautiful Mecklenburgh Square garden, normally closed to the public. Another highlight is London’s second oldest plane tree in Brunswick Square, one of the city’s top ten trees.

Forest bathing is a form of active mindfulness when walking in nature. This hour long session run by the London Wildlife Trust will immerse you in the sight, sound, scent, texture and taste of Sydenham Hill Woods. You’ll leave refreshed, relaxed and ready to reconnect with the world around you.

Join Tottenham Trees to explore some of the exotic trees of Downhills Park together with a new orchard recently planted. Along with some identification tips there will help on how to prune and manage fruit trees. So if you want to discover a Kentucky Coffee Tree or be inspired to plant an orchard.

Talking Trees: The Chinese National Forest City Initiative, 2pm - 4pm
Meet at The Roger Smith Room, The Wesley Hotel, 81-103 Euston St, Kings Cross, London, NW1 2EZ.
Last November, Craig Harrison, from the Forestry Commission, spoke at the first International Forest City Conference in Shenzhen, China. This talk sees Craig discuss London’s trees and woodlands. He’ll also cover the wonderful tree scape of the Forest City of Shenzhen. How has this happened in a place that has grown from 30,000 inhabitants in 1980 to 12 million today?

Mulberry guided walk, 11am - 1pm

Veteran oak tree walk in Dulwich Park, 4pm – 6pm
Meet inside the Court Lane gates, Dulwich Park, Dulwich, London, SE21 7EA.
Learn about the history of the park, a remnant of the ancient Dulwich Common, on this guided walk The River Effra, one of London's lost rivers, also used to flow through the area. There are a number of old boundary oak trees which mark former parcels of farmland and common land. Discover these relics of London’s natural heritage and hear stories of the trees of Dulwich Park.

Photographing Trees: Beating the Bounds, 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Start (and finish) Golders Green Tube station, NW11 7RN (Main exit).
Before the Tube, this part of London was fairly rural: boundaries were marked by hedgerows and oak trees. Join keen-eyed urban nature photographer and writer, Peter Coles, to go stalking boundary trees in Golders Green and Hampstead Heath. The route will include walking over uneven surfaces and rough ground so come prepared.

This interactive family walkshop will follow the park’s ‘Ice Age Tree Trail’. Come and boost your knowledge of interesting tree facts with a unique spin on ‘true or false’. Everyone who takes part will be given a learning journal to use at the event. No previous knowledge is required.

Great North Wood Tree Walk with London Wildlife Trust, 7pm- 8:30pm
Meet by the gates of St Augustine's Church, One Tree Hill, London, SE23 3LE.
Join us for a guided walk to explore the fascinating world of trees. Discover the history of One Tree Hill as part of the once vast Great North Wood. You’ll also learn how to identify trees by looking at their leaves, bark and other features.
Free, but a suggested donation of £3 will go towards conserving the Great North Wood living landscape.

Stalking the Hardy Ash Photography Walkshop, 6.15pm - 8.00pm

Just 150 years ago, poet and novelist Thomas Hardy oversaw the removal of gravestones in Old St Pancras Churchyard, leaning some of them up against an ash tree. Following the hidden River Fleet, downriver from Kentish Town towards King's Cross, on this photography walkshop you will be uncovering unusual trees while “Stalking the Hardy Ash”. The walkshop will be led by Peter Coles, urban nature writer and photographer, and supported by urban ecologist Andrew Stuck. Madeleine Hodge of the Ash Project will also be taking part.

Specialist allergy and asthma nurse Shenagh Hume and children’s garden designer Jackie Herald will discuss London’s street tree planting with health in mind. The first principle in treating any allergy is avoidance. Join Ken Greenway, a volunteer bat worker with Natural England on this walk with bat detectors to listen out for our furry friends. The detectors help you identify the species that are swooping around and to listen to them ‘chattering’ as they hunt for food. The Ash Project has been commissioned by the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an urgent response to the devastating effects of Ash dieback.
