Come and celebrate London’s trees and woodlands with a week of special events.

You’ll find events on the map and also listed below by date.

The 60 plus events include talks, guided walks and tours in streets, parks and woodlands. There'll also be mindfulness, poetry, art and photography walkshops, children’s activities plus exhibitions at City Hall and Thames Chase Forest.

Tree-mendous Children Photography exhibition

Spiral Ramp, City Hall SE1 2AA

Monday 22 May - Friday 16 June, 8am-6pm (not open weekends or bank holidays)

See photos from a few projects that aim to inspire the next generation to plant, appreciate and love London’s trees. This exhibition is presented by the Mayor and the London Tree Partnership.

Thames Chase Photography Competition exhibition

Thames Chase Forest Centre, Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster Essex, RM14 3NS

Saturday 27 May - Sunday 4 June, 10am-7pm

This exhibition will showcase the best images of people’s favourite trees in the Thames Chase Community Forest. The closing date for entries is 26 May. Entries will be shown in the Forest Centre during London Tree Week where the public will vote for their favourite.

Morus Londinium Charlton House

Saturday 20 May – Sunday 23 July, 9am-10pm (closed Sundays and bank holidays)

Reflect on one of London’s oldest mulberry trees and its stories in this special exhibition. Designers Stables and Lucraft use mirrors to create installations so visitors can look deep into the branches of these veteran trees. The black mulberry at Charlton House is thought to be at least 400 years old.

Saturday 20 May – Sunday 23 July, 11am-4pm

Reflect on one of London’s oldest mulberry trees and its stories in this special exhibition. Designers Stables and Lucraft use mirrors to create installations so visitors can look deep into the branches of these veteran trees. The recumbent mulberry tree at Forty Hall is around 120 years old.

Peckham Tree-sure Hunt - Peckham SE15 4EE

There is a forest of trees in our concrete jungle. Peckham's trees are as big, unique and diverse as we are. Come and discover a tree-sure trove of plants, animals, fun activities and wild facts, all hiding in plain sight! Look out for the distinctive black and white posters across the Peckham Rye Lane area, unlock their QR codes and dive in!

This 11 mile cycle route takes in a few of the ancient yews of Bromley. It starts at Hayes station. It is accessible for the whole family but on-road experience is necessary.

Hainault Lodge nature trail - PDF

Redbridge, IG6 3HP

This former 18th-century hunting lodge on top of Hog Hill is now a Local Nature Reserve. The grounds are surrounded by mature woodland including some massive oak and hornbeam pollards.

Claybury Park is on the south-facing slopes of a ridge east of Woodford Bridge. The varied site includes parkland, ancient woodland, patches of scrub, an orchard, a few ponds and open rides.

Explore Forestry Commission woodlands in the Thames Chase Community Forest

The Thames Chase Community Forest has several woodlands to explore, each offering visitors a great place to relax, walk, cycle and play.

Campfire Tree Safari, 10:00am - 1:00pm

Meet at Soanes Centre, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, Southern Grove, London, E3 4PX.

Rangers Dan and Sarah invite you to join them for proper coffee round the campfire and an urban tree safari. You’ll gain skills in identifying common broadleaved trees and learn how they’re cared for on this idyllic woodland ramble, on their tree ID skills, or just enjoy this hidden oasis at its dappled and shady best.

Stalking Trees in Highgate Woods, 10:30am - 12:30pm FULLY BOOKED

Meet at Highgate Tube, N6.

Join The Woodland Trust to walk and stalk through the Ancient Wood and VIP trees in Highgate Wood. This walk is led by Peter Coles, urban nature writer and photographer, with the support of urban ecologist Andrew Stuck. The whole family will enjoy this chance to discover the old Hornbeam coppices and learn about their history.

Trees of Bloomsbury Walk, 11:00 am to 12:30 pm

Meet at the steps of the Goodenough Club, 23 Mecklenburgh Square, London, WC1N 2AD.

The Association of Bloomsbury Squares and Gardens together with Val Martin Memorial Walks are pleased to invite you to this free guided tree walk. Come and see some of the area’s splendid and unusual trees. View the New Zealand border in the beautiful Mecklenburgh Square garden, normally closed to the public. Another highlight is London’s second oldest plane tree in Brunswick Square, one of the city’s top ten trees.

Forest Immersion (Lunchtime), 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Meet at Crescent Wood Road Entrance, Sydenham Hill Wood and Cox's Walk, Sydenham Hill, London, SE26 6LS.

Forest bathing is a form of active mindfulness when walking in nature. This hour long session run by the London Wildlife Trust will immerse you in the sight, sound, scent, texture and taste of Sydenham Hill Woods. You’ll leave refreshed, relaxed and ready to reconnect with the world around you.

Tottenham Trees: Downhills Park Tree Walk, 2pm - 3:15pm

Meet at Downhills Park Cafe, N17 6PR.

Join Tottenham Trees to explore some of the exotic trees of Downhills Park together with a new orchard recently planted. Along with some identification tips there will help on how to prune and manage fruit trees. So if you want to discover a Kentucky Coffee Tree or be inspired to plant an orchard.

Talking Trees: The Chinese National Forest City Initiative, 2pm - 4pm

Meet at The Roger Smith Room, The Wesley Hotel, 81-103 Euston St, Kings Cross, London, NW1 2EZ.

Last November, Craig Harrison, from the Forestry Commission, spoke at the first International Forest City Conference in Shenzhen, China. This talk sees Craig discuss London’s trees and woodlands. He’ll also cover the wonderful tree scape of the Forest City of Shenzhen. How has this happened in a place that has grown from 30,000 inhabitants in 1980 to 12 million today?

Discover some of the more unusual specimen trees in the beautiful Grange Garden, Beddington Park. Learn about gingko, redwoods, wingnuts and more!

Haiku Woods walkshop, 3pm - 4:30pm

Meet at Queen’s Wood Community Cafe, Queens Wood Lodge, 42 Muswell Hill Road, London, N10 3JP.

Walk, talk, recite, write haiku.

Foot powered poems.

Join the Museum of Walking for this free form walk in which you get to write and inspire others to write haiku. With the option to have them printed and published in a zine – as an anthology from the walkshop.

Talking Trees: Greening our Urban Communities, 4pm - 6pm

Meet at the Wesley Hotel, Euston, NW1 2EZ.

This Woodland Trust talk from Wakefield volunteer Roger Parkinson will cover how to engage communities and schools in green space improvements. He’ll discuss what motivates him and show you how to develop projects with little funding, but surprising results.

Haiku on the Rye - Creative Writing Haiku Walkshop, 11am - 1pm FULLY BOOKED

Meet at Peckham Rye Park.

This guided creative writing Haiku walkshop will focus around the park’s arboretum and sensory garden. Learn the art of Japanese Haiku-style writing in a descriptive style, using trees and nature as your influence. This event is ideal for adults or families with children aged 12 and over.

Mulberry guided walk, 11am - 1pm

Meet by the old mulberry tree at the entrance to Charlton House, Greenwich, SE7 8RE, finishing in Sayes Court in Deptford.

Explore the great heritage of London’s mulberry trees and the stories they can tell of Greenwich and the surrounding area. This guided walk led by Dr Peter Coles is part of The Conservation Foundation’s Morus Londinium project.

Open Day at Kingston Permaculture Reserve, 1pm - 4:30pm

Meet at Kingston Permaculture Reserve, KT5 9QP.

Come and encounter around 200 trees, including a variety of heritage apples, pears, plums and gages, quince, medlar, walnuts and hazelnuts, a new forest garden as well as a pond and polytunnel. This voluntary community project is open to coincide with London Tree Week.

Edible Trees - Foraging in the Woods, 1:30pm - 4:30pm

Meet at Soanes Centre, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, Southern Grove, London, E3 4PX.

Take foraging up a notch on this tree-centric hunt for wild food with the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. As you walk through this hidden woodland, you'll learn sustainable harvesting techniques and to identify plants you can munch on. Nibble leaves, flowers and roots - then take some home to turn into your own wild salad.

Tall Tree Tales - walk at Stephens House and Gardens, 2pm - 3pm

Meet at The Visitor Centre, Stephens House and Gardens Finchley, N3 3QE.

See over 600 trees in a new light. Come and hear stories of traditions, superstitions, politics and trade and even a little bit of murder thrown in.

Meet at the cafe within the park, White Lodge Mansion, Springfield Park, E5 9EF.

Health coach Mel Sutton will be your guide on this mindful walk. It’s also a chance to learn about the health and healing aspects of trees.

Veteran oak tree walk in Dulwich Park, 4pm – 6pm

Meet inside the Court Lane gates, Dulwich Park, Dulwich, London, SE21 7EA.

Learn about the history of the park, a remnant of the ancient Dulwich Common, on this guided walk The River Effra, one of London's lost rivers, also used to flow through the area. There are a number of old boundary oak trees which mark former parcels of farmland and common land. Discover these relics of London’s natural heritage and hear stories of the trees of Dulwich Park.

Mindfulness amongst trees, 12:30pm - 2:00pm FULLY BOOKED

Meet outside Park View Cafe, 327 Green Lanes, London, N4 1BZ (by the Manor House Gate, Finsbury Park).

Come and learn techniques to be more mindful and calm in the company of health coach Mel Sutton. Also discover some of the healing and health aspects of trees.

Photographing Trees: Beating the Bounds, 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Start (and finish) Golders Green Tube station, NW11 7RN (Main exit).

Before the Tube, this part of London was fairly rural: boundaries were marked by hedgerows and oak trees. Join keen-eyed urban nature photographer and writer, Peter Coles, to go stalking boundary trees in Golders Green and Hampstead Heath. The route will include walking over uneven surfaces and rough ground so come prepared.

Suitable for age 16-plus. Children must be accompanied.

Peter Coles, urban nature writer and photographer leads a walk to discover the City of London’s historic mulberry trees. He also champions London’s mulberry tree heritage through The Conservation Foundation’s Morus Londinium project.

Meet at Hyde Park, exit Marble Arch Tube station, W1C 1LX.

Budding photographers of all abilities will enjoy this free course led by writer and photographer Edward Parker. Come and learn how to change the settings on your camera to get the best results whatever equipment you use. Over the three hour session, you’ll visit the Tyburn Tree at Speaker’s corner, the London Plane at Russell Square and the Hardy Tree by St Pancras.

Woodland Trust Walk - Tree or False? 6:15pm - 7:45pm

Meet at Mary Geraldine Harmsworth Park, Elephant and Castle, SE1 6ER.

This interactive family walkshop will follow the park’s ‘Ice Age Tree Trail’. Come and boost your knowledge of interesting tree facts with a unique spin on ‘true or false’. Everyone who takes part will be given a learning journal to use at the event. No previous knowledge is required.

Talking Trees: Trees, Woods and Londoners - Talk by Carenza Lewis, Fiona Stafford and Mathew Frith, 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Author Fiona Stafford, London Wildlife Trust's Matthew Frith and Carenza Lewis discuss the new Charter for Trees, Woods and People. They’ll also talk about the evolving relationship between people and trees, and what the charter could mean for London.

Talking Trees: The Naming of Trees - Talk by William Fiennes, 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Meet at Committee Room 4, City Hall, More London, SE1 2AA.

William Fiennes talks about learning the names of our native trees. He’ll also explore what the act of naming says about our relationship with the world around us.

Great North Wood Tree Walk with London Wildlife Trust, 7pm- 8:30pm

Meet by the gates of St Augustine's Church, One Tree Hill, London, SE23 3LE.

Join us for a guided walk to explore the fascinating world of trees. Discover the history of One Tree Hill as part of the once vast Great North Wood. You’ll also learn how to identify trees by looking at their leaves, bark and other features.

Free, but a suggested donation of £3 will go towards conserving the Great North Wood living landscape.

Garden Immersion (Evening), 7:30pm - 8:30pm

Meet at Centre for Wildlife Gardening, SE15 4EE.

Forest bathing is a form of active mindfulness when walking in nature. This evening session will encourage you to use all five of your senses and identify local wildlife, native trees and shrubs. You’ll leave refreshed, relaxed and rested at the end of your day.

It's Half Term and London Tree Week! Come and join us for an inspiring Forest School taster session. Forest School is made up of a wide range of experiences and adventures, including mini beast hunts, pond dipping, shelter building and games.

One, Two, Tree! Family workshop, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Meet at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses, SE24 0PA.

Celebrate the trees in our gardens and Brockwell Park. Have fun, learn and become a tree champion! We’ll be doing blindfolded tree hugging, a mirror walk, folklore trail, and nature crafts.

Woodland Walk 10:30am-12 noon

Meet at Claybury Park, entrance on Ravensbourne Gardens at junction with Wedmore Avenue, IG5 0XF

Come and celebrate Tree Week by joining the Ranger for a wander around Claybury Woods. You’ll learn all about the different trees that can be found in the woods as well as the wildlife that lives there. Recommended 5 yrs+. Stalking the Hardy Ash Photography Walkshop, 6.15pm - 8.00pm

Meet at Kentish Town rail & tube station. Finish at Old St Pancras Churchyard (nearest tube: King's Cross).

Just 150 years ago, poet and novelist Thomas Hardy oversaw the removal of gravestones in Old St Pancras Churchyard, leaning some of them up against an ash tree. Following the hidden River Fleet, downriver from Kentish Town towards King's Cross, on this photography walkshop you will be uncovering unusual trees while “Stalking the Hardy Ash”. The walkshop will be led by Peter Coles, urban nature writer and photographer, and supported by urban ecologist Andrew Stuck. Madeleine Hodge of the Ash Project will also be taking part.

Specialist allergy and asthma nurse Shenagh Hume and children’s garden designer Jackie Herald will discuss London’s street tree planting with health in mind. The first principle in treating any allergy is avoidance. Bat Walk, 8.30pm - 10.30pm

Join Ken Greenway, a volunteer bat worker with Natural England on this walk with bat detectors to listen out for our furry friends. The detectors help you identify the species that are swooping around and to listen to them ‘chattering’ as they hunt for food. The Ash Project has been commissioned by the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is an urgent response to the devastating effects of Ash dieback.
