Question

A Further Fall in Confidence in the Police in London

The latest data from the MOPAC Public Attitudes Survey shows that police confidence has fallen to a record low of 49% as of March 2022. This fall has been steady and consistent since June 2017, when confidence was at 69%. What further action will you be taking to tackle this, above and beyond what you are already doing?

Rebuilding trust and confidence in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is at the heart of my new Police and Crime Plan. I am determined that everyone in London feels safer in their city; and that all Londoners trust the MPS to tackle the issues that matter to them and that they will treat them fairly.

To achieve this the police and partners must deal effectively with the crime, anti-social behaviour and safety issues that concern the public most. Through my Office for Policing and Crime, I am driving a concerted focus by the MPS, local authorities and others to tackle these issues and I am investing in boosting neighbourhood policing numbers and modernising the MPS to more effectively tackle crime on and off-line.

In addition, we know trust and confidence amongst London’s Black communities is lower than for those from White backgrounds, and through my Action Plan for Transparency, Accountability and Trust in Policing, launched in November 2020, I will continue to drive work to reduce this gap.

I am pleased by the appointment of the new Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, who has made clear to me that he is determined to be a reforming Commissioner, committed to implementing a robust plan to rebuild trust and confidence in the police and to drive through the urgent reforms and step change in culture and performance Londoners deserve.
