What will I be doing?

  • Facilitating a walking group for unpaid carers in a park in one of the three boroughs that we operate (Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea). The borough of the walking group is negotiable on where you live and the length of your commute.

Would you like to make a difference to your community, meet new people and keep fit in the process? Carers Network are looking to start a walking group for the unpaid carers that we support.

Numerous studies have shown that getting outdoors is a natural antidepressant that can connect us with nature and facilitate feelings of calmness through helping us pause and reset from the stresses of everyday life.
  • By launching a walking group, we hope to bring carers together so they can meet others in a similar position, reduce stress levels through having time away from their caring role, and aim to reach the recommended quote of 150 minute of physical activity per week (NHS guidelines).

  • The carers that we support who attend will most likely have a low fitness level, so the intensity levels will need to be quite adjusted accordingly.
  • Liaising with the Volunteer Development Officer on group numbers, and feedback from group members
  • The ability to adapt the session, for example if carers struggle with the distance, carry an injury, or if the planned route is waterlogged or very muddy

What impact will this have?

  • Getting our service users to meet others in a similar position to tackle social isolation. Building rapport with our service users.
  • Through getting our unpaid carers to get outdoors and lower stress levels
  • Helping carers to take a well deserved break fro their caring role and supporting them to achieve the NHS recommended 150 minutes of exercise
