What will I be doing?

  • Driving a van (ideally provided by volunteer, otherwise there is the possibility of us renting one) from one location to the other across the boroughs of Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham and Lambeth, to help us rotate our stock of books across projects
  • Lifting heavy boxes and carrying them in and out of the van, up and down flights of stairs
  • Communicate with Doorstep Library staff and other staff at our bases to arrange the logistics of the bookswap

What impact will this have?

  • It is important to us that children have access to a variety of books they can pick and choose from during our home reading visits, and we know that having books that spark their interest is what does the trick and turns them into curious and voracious readers. By being a Volunteer Driver, you will enable us to bring new and exciting reads to more than 500 children whom we visit each week.
  • You will make our volunteers happy too! There is nothing as satisfying as finding the right book for a child who might not think much about reading. Thanks to your help rotating our stock, our volunteers will have more options of which books to pack in their rucksacks and get excited about!
  • Engaging parents in the reading sessions is much easier if our volunteers have access to a wide variety of books. Parents will see value in our service if we are able to present new books that capture their children's imagination and that are suitable to their needs.

Commitment

  • This role is flexible, there is no set day/time, we can work around your schedule (not evenings).

What else do I need to know?

  • Please note that it will be your responsibility to ensure you that you have a full, valid driving licence and that your van is correctly insured for carrying out this task.
  • We are hoping to have fresh reads available to the children we visit by September, when our projects resume. However, there is some flexibility with regards to timings, so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you think you might be able to help with this at any other point.
  • Your help will make a huge and tangible difference, enabling us to bring new and exciting learning adventures to children across London!

Expenses

  • We are able to cover expenses (petrol and possibly van rental if this needs to be hired). We can promote your business on social media and list you as a supporter on our website. Plus, you’ll receive eternal gratitude - from our staff, volunteers and the families we visit!
