What will I be doing?

  • To drive their minibus to collect passengers to attend daycentres and social groups around the borough of Lewisham.
  • To ensure passengers are secure in their seats and that any wheelchairs are safely secured. (Minibus drivers will have a passenger to help with these if there are more than four passengers.).
  • To ensure passengers are left inside their homes when returned.
  • To collect fares from passengers if it is required.

What impact will this have?

  • Volunteers will help socially isolated older people who are unable to use public transport get out of the house and interact with other people at social clubs or day centres.
  • By taking service users to social clubs or day centres it gives their carers the chance of respite.
  • Help provide a valuable, affordable alternative to taxis.

Commitment

  • We have journeys at different times during the week depending on location. Most minibus drives involve taking people to and from social clubs around the borough of Lewisham. In general a return drive, collecting the passengers from their homes, taking them to the venue and returning them home takes roughly three hours. However there is generally time in between where you wouldn’t be on the road. Some volunteer minibus drivers do multiple drives in a day and so they may be out and about for six/seven hours, but again there will generally be time in-between to sit down, have lunch or a cup of tea.

Expenses

  • Travel expenses.

Lunch to the equivalent of £4.50 will be paid if you volunteer for four hours or more in a day.

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required
