What will I be doing?

  • Befrienders are carefully matched with disadvantaged families living in Westminster to provide them with practical and emotional support in the challenges they face.
  • -Befrienders will Provide a listening ear to the family and talk through their problems and issues.
    -Help children with their homework, provide guidance with filling in forms and create timetables, action plans and set goals to improve day-to-day life.
  • -Help families find out about local services such as health and housing, shops and markets, schools and playgroups.
    -Introduce families to helpful organisations.

What impact will this have?

  • By being part of WBAF volunteers’ team you will be helping us to have greater reach in making a positive impact on the lives of many vulnerable families and young people, living in Westminster.
  • Befriending will help families break cycles of social exclusion,enhance family cohesion, wellbeing and achievement by providing support to families in a wide range of issues.
  • Empowering families to overcoming challenging circumstances and helping them find new ways to connect with their local community.

Commitment

  • Weekly 2-3 hour visits to families for a minimum of six months.

What else do I need to know?

  • Experiences and qualities required:
    -Ability to work with young people and families.
    -Ability to understand and willingness to work to a concept that includes an empowering and non-directive approach.
    -Ability to work independently.
    Speaking Arabic or Bengali would be an advantage.
