Organisation aims / mission / values

  • Our work focuses on addressing food insecurity through redistributing surplus food and empowering communities to mutually support one another. We also seek to promote wellbeing by enabling access to our green spaces and facilitating peer support spaces.
  • We are inclusive and people-focused: we believe people of all backgrounds and abilities have a role in achieving a just future for all of us and our environment, and we engage with the concerns and passions of individuals and community groups.
  • We are creative and collaborative: we believe that innovation will help us to achieve the change we want to see, and that by working alongside partners and local community groups we will make that change lasting.
  • We are committed to the careful use of both human and environmental resources.
  • We are committed to being transparent in our governance and in how we communicate with partners and supporters.
  • We are committed to remaining relevant to our community and conscious of the priorities of the people we work with.

How we deliver these aims

We engage with residents of Waltham Forest and empower our community to live more sustainably. This is done through developing local projects focusing on healthy, affordable, sustainable food, waste reduction and conserving resources. Our activities include a food distribution network, a people's kitchen, and establishing a borough-wide food co-op. Alongside this, we are also actively involved in supporting community wellbeing; organising local walks, a regular community cafe and warm space, and providing a space for other local groups to meet.

Who benefits from our work

The Hornbeam has been at the heart of community life in the borough of Waltham Forest since 1994. From individuals and families struggling with food poverty, to people with mental health issues, and folks who do not have settled status in the UK, our community is a vibrant one with many needs, experiences and talents. We also work with local organisations that support people with dementia, church groups and schools.
