How we deliver these aims

We have recruited, trained and supported a team of 40+ visitor experience volunteers, under the management of the Heritage Manager, and 11 volunteer trustees with the focus to keep the Castle open for enjoyment and learning by the public and the local community. We are a small charity with two paid members of staff and we are dependent on entrance fees, private hire, donations and the café licence fee to remain open. We work with local families, schools, cultural and community groups to deliver educational and cultural events and activities focused on the building, its history, the people associated with it, and the natural environment of ancient woodland surrounding it so that all are enabled to be active participants in the making of the Castle’s story for future generations.

Who benefits from our work

The Castle is a special place, being close to nature and a refuge from modern city life. Current volunteers and visitors describe the castle as a calm and peaceful environment. We promote positive mental wellbeing and improved physical health through a number of new initiatives. We have a programme which will have benefits for those in our community with significant social needs but also those residents who live busy urban lives and need space to relax and restore their mental well-being – an approach of prevention rather than cure. We do this through volunteering activities, family activities, school and other group events, encouraging physical activity and conservation of the natural environment.
