Location: 222c, Belsize Rd , Kilburn, London, NW6 4DJ (see map)

Travel: Kilburn Park station. Abbey Road bus stop.

Start date: 27/06/2019 (ongoing)

Age: Volunteers should be 16 years old and above+

What will I be doing?

  • To help build the confidence of an older learner who is interested in being more active with the internet.

  • Engaging the older learner through convocation and find out past hobbies with the aid of todays technology, may it be a mobile phone, tablet or a laptop.
  • Showing how to use their own internet device
  • Help the learner access the internet from the provided laptops
  • Finding ways for them to save money
  • Raising awareness of how to use the internet safely

What impact will this have?

  • You as a volunteer will be making massive changes to the older generation engagement skills by using the internet.
  • You will be building the confidence of the learners to get the most out of the internet for themselves.
  • You could help bring families closer by getting an older person to master an app or two.
  • You could help get shopping delivered to the learner as they may find it difficult to leave their home.
  • You would change the outlook the learner will have about the internet.

Commitment

  • All IT skills are welcome as each person who attends these classes, have different needs for the internet so I'm looking for people who are patient, reliable and knowledgeable volunteers who enjoy interacting with people as well as with technology.
Being able to volunteer on Saturdays is essential.

What else do I need to know?

  • The Abbey Community Centre is a vibrant community facility and resource, providing a safe and welcoming meeting place in the heart of Kilburn. The centre exists to improve the quality of life for local people by offering excellent services which provide a range of educational, recreational, cultural and social opportunities.
  • Tech Buddies IT volunteers will need to be patient, reliable (good time keepers), have good spoken English, be friendly, good listeners, non-judgmental and should have a good sense of humour. Tech Buddies IT volunteers will also need to be regular users of technology (e.g. computers/tablets/smartphones) with a genuine desire to share their skills and help older people use technology

Background checks

  • No background checks are required
