What will I be doing?

  • Encouraging client to build confidence and independence.
  • Assisting client in obtaining and completing various forms.
  • Helping with activities such as light cooking, reading, etc., agreed upon between you and the client.
  • Accompanying client on walks to increase independence and wellbeing.
  • Accompanying client with grocery shopping.
  • Supporting client with using and accessing the internet, phone, or TV.

  • Improving independence, by organising travel support.
  • Reducing social isolation, by introducing client to groups and clubs.
  • Improving health and well being, by supporting client with health goals, such as healthier eating and/or exercise.

Commitment

  • Flexible - from a couple of hours to a couple of days per week.
  • A minimum 6 month commitment is required.

What else do I need to know?

  • The Personal Independence Coordinator service helps older people to identify personal goals, and supports them to achieve these. Support may be given in the community or in the older person’s home.

Expenses

  • Travel, and lunch in the event of a whole day's volunteering

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required

Training

  • General volunteer induction, covering Age UK Croydon's structure, history, projects, policies and procedures.
  • PIC induction, training volunteers in their role as PIC (Personal Independence Coordinator) support.
  • Shadowing with Personal Independence Coordinators, before volunteering starts.
