What will I be doing?

  • The EPEC Being a Parent course is led by local parent volunteers who have completed the accredited EPEC training. Group leaders’ qualities and skills, backgrounds, experience, and status as parents are critical to engaging other parents and affecting change by:
    • Building trusting relationships so that parents feel encouraged, optimistic and well informed about EPEC, particularly those with higher levels of need.
    • Shaping EPEC’s manualised course content and methods to reflect the individual and collective needs of parents and their children
    • Helping parents to develop individual plans and goals for themselves, their children and family.
  • To be certified as an EPEC Parent Group Leader and accredited in Level 3 Group Leader Skills and Facilitation you will need to:
    • Attend 11 five hour EPEC training sessions (a minimum of 80% attendance for certification).
    • Complete a weekly journal.
    • Facilitate 8 weeks of the Being a Parent course.
    • Complete a DBS check (supervisor will organise this).

  • When facilitating the weekly volunteering commitment is 4 hours with supervision fortnightly (up to an hour). Support the EPEC Hub Team with outreach to parents.

What impact will this have?

  • The Empowering Parents Empowering Communities (EPEC) Being a Parent course is peer-led by a team of volunteers to parents/ carers of children aged between 2-5 years. It aims to improve child development and outcomes, parenting, family resilience and family relationships.
  • The Being a Parent course creates a trusting group ethos, where parents are encouraged and supported to explore: • Positive behaviour management and discipline strategies. • Managing parent and family stress. • Understanding and managing children’s feelings. • Parent listening, communication, play and interaction skills. • Attachment and parent-child relationships. • Parenting roles, expectations and culture.
  • Parent Group Leaders also have many opportunities to access training provided by the London Borough of Havering enabling them to upskill and support families in more specialist areas outside of the Parent Group Leader role.
