What will I be doing?

  • We need volunteers who can help organise fun garden -based activities and playtime at our community allotment project.
  • The role involves helping to set up the space for activities (i.e. put out materials, clean surfaces, etc.) and tidying up; helping to plan activities for the children (ie songs, games, painting etc.); preparing food and snacks; and supervising children so that they can play in a fun and safe environment.
  • We would also encourage you to get to know the parents that attend and to have informal conversations with them. Many of the parents that come to our groups are isolated and without a network of support and we aim to fill this gap.

What impact will this have?

  • Working together to grow fruit and vegetables is an opportunity to bring members of our diverse community together to learn about nature and growing food in an urban environment. Our goal is to build social integration while we grow food that can be shared in our community, helping to break down the barriers to healthy eating.
  • Volunteers play an integral role in promoting social integration, combating isolation and improving the well being of the parents that attend our groups.
  • Through building positive relationships within our community, volunteers directly help to empower parents and improve the health and development outcomes for young children in the area.
  • By providing a reliable human connection, volunteers help to engage a number of hard-to-reach communities who don't normally access health and social services in Southwark.
