What will I be doing?

  • There are 40 parks and 18 Nature reserves in the Borough and we work in most of them at least once throughout the year.
  • From wading in the river to walking in the woods Nature Conservation Officers Lewisham and Glendale will guide you through a wide range of environmental tasks and will be there to guide you every step of the way.
  • We have a 3 month programme which explains in more detail where we work and what we will be doing.

Commitment

  • Improve your fitness by taking part in conservation activities in the parks and nature reserves in Lewisham. Nature's Gym is free and fun - no experience is needed. We work every Thursday and once a month on a Saturday a month (all weathers) between 11am-2pm.
  • Regular/core days working take place on Thursdays and Saturdays (see our website).

What else do I need to know?

  • 2 'taster sessions' will need to be attended before a volunteer is registered'
  • If you wish to continue to volunteer, we will send you a ‘Welcome Pack’ which contains the registration forms. Please be aware the return of a completed registration form is considered an acknowledgement that you that you have received and fully understood the nature of the tasks involved
  • The following activities may be carried out by volunteers.

    · Use of cutting implements such as secateurs
    · Digging with picks and shovels
    · Carrying – loads may vary in weight
    · Working in water (waders provided)
    · Working in uneven areas (including slopes and river banks)
    · Laying down timber (e.g. to build steps)
    · Planting
    · Tree felling
    · Slash cutting (of meadow grasses)

Training
