What will I be doing?

  • We have an exciting opportunity for you to volunteer at Hammersmith Hospital for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award this Spring as part of our Youth Volunteering Programme.

    You will be a kind and friendly face around the hospital, spending time with our patients, developing new skills and gaining experience either in a front of house environment or with our hospital library service.
  • Hospital Library Service

    - Take the mobile library service around the hospital to a number of in-patient wards.
    - Spend time chatting and listening to patients and visitors.
    - Chat with patients about their taste in books and supply them with books, magazines, newspapers and our patient puzzle book from the library trolley.
  • Hospital Welcome Volunteer

    - Welcome patients and visitors to the hospital within the main reception.
    - Help navigate patients to the right wards/clinics.
    - Work with reception staff for other enquires/questions.
    - Direct patients to other areas such as toilets, bus stops, cafes and shops.

  • You must have registered or be registering for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award before you start volunteering with us.

    You need to have reached your 16th birthday by Monday 3 February 2019 2019, to join this intake.

    The 12 month placement will be between 24 February 2020 to 22 February 2021.

    The 6 month placement will be between 24 February 2020 to 28 August 2020.

  • Due to the popularity of the programme, we will be prioritising applications from individuals who live within the following postcode areas close to Hammersmith Hospital:

    NW10, NW2, NW26, NW6, SW1P, W10, W11, W12, W14, W2, W3, W4, W5, W6, W8, W9, WC1E, WC2H SW10, SW13, SW14, SW15, SW5, SW6.
  • Our Volunteer Selection and Appointment Process for this role – IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ

    We will review and shortlist all applications received, applicants who meet what we are looking for will be invited to a volunteer selection event on:
    – Wednesday 22 January 2020 between 16.00 – 18.00
    – You will be required to attend this selection event to be considered to volunteer with us.

    You need to have reached your 16th birthday by Monday 3 February 2020 to join this intake.
    You must be registered with The Duke of Edinburgh’s award by Monday 3 February 2020.
    We run volunteer selection events to give us a chance to meet potential new volunteers and for them to meet us and see what we do. We make them fun and informative. Roles will be offered to suitable applicants. We receive high numbers of applications for this programme and attendance at a selection event does not guarantee being offered a place to volunteer.

    The Volunteering Department will take up two satisfactory references, and will process a DBS disclosure application for you, which we require prior to any new volunteer starting with us. If you are 16 or 17, one of your references must be from a parent/guardian. Please check the list of required documents to complete a DBS check to ensure that you have access to all of them if you are successful. We will not be able to progress your application if we cannot submit a DBS application for you by Monday 17 February 2020 at the latest (subject to our availability to meet with you to process the application).

    Upon receipt of satisfactory references and DBS disclosure, the Volunteering Department will arrange for you to attend a Core Training day ahead of your start date with us. This core training day is essential before you can start volunteering. We run 2-3 Core Training days per month, including one day on a weekend date.

    DBS /reference checks
    Thursday 23 January 2020 until Monday 17 February 2020
    You will need to come into the hospital for us to process your DBS application.
