Start date: Ongoing
What will I be doing?
- We are looking for volunteers to open and manage the Information Centre at Brompton Cemetery. Volunteers work in pairs, and open the Information Centre every day for a 2.5 hour shift. Duties include:.
- Opening and closing the Centre.
- Welcome visitors to the cemetery, answer any questions they have, and provide information about the Cemetery and its history. You don't need to already know anything about the Cemetery, since we have plenty of literature on hand and full training will be given. And there are plenty of people to ask if you don't know the answer! More important is that you enjoy meeting people and helping them with their queries.
- Provide visitors with guidebooks, postcards, Friends magazines and other items for sale. Invite visitors to join Friends of Brompton Cemetery.
- Join various interest groups (e.g. photography, gardening or start your own).
- As a North Lodge volunteer, contribute to ideas and event planning for the Friends of Brompton Cemetery, to help us improve the experience for visitors and volunteers.
A beautiful day at Brompton Cemetery
What impact will this have?
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for local visitors, tourists, and for people visiting graves in the Cemetery. The cemetery is managed by Royal Parks and is still an active cemetery.
- Enhance Brompton Cemetery's reputation as a significant historical place. The cemetery is alive with the amazing stories of all the people buried there since the 1840s, including some well-known names like Emmeline Pankhurst and John Snow. Many visitors come to learn about the history of the Cemetery.
- Build relationships between Brompton Cemetery and the local community. Brompton Cemetery actively liaises with members of local community and schools, and community involvement is promoted with art exhibitions, music concerts, guided walks and theatre.
- Assist people looking for graves. Every day we have people seeking long lost family graves, and it is always an interesting detective mission helping them.
