What will I be doing?

  • A helping volunteer is the first face a suicidal person visiting The Listening Place will see. HVs are central to each shift by welcoming visitors as well as supporting the listening volunteers on shift.

  • Meet and greet visitors, ensure that they are settled and comfortable
  • Organise the setting up and clearing of eight listening rooms
  • Deal with telephone enquiries, redirect calls and take messages
  • Book visitor appointments, send appointment reminder emails and schedule text reminders to visitors
  • Support the listening volunteers on shift by communicating visitor arrivals and how visitors seem on arrival

What impact will this have?

  • Volunteers will be part of a team that support adults who feel life is no longer worth living
  • Helping volunteers meet and greet distressed visitors, making sure they are settled and comfortable. HVs must be warm, empathetic and approachable
  • Helping volunteers support the listening volunteers on shift by undertaking a variety of admin and other tasks

Commitment

  • Volunteers must commit to a regular 4-hour fortnightly shift, at the same time and with the same team
  • To ensure continuity for our visitors we require a one-year minimum commitment from our volunteers, as well as three months' notice of intention to leave

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required

Training

  • Volunteers will be asked to fill out an application form and then be invited to an information meeting (application depending)
  • Volunteers will then be invited for a one-to-one interview (potentially a second, if required).
  • Finally you will be invited to join training. Training is approximately 5 hours, and runs over two modules.
