What will I be doing?

  • Trained volunteers will offer telephone support only during Covid-19 lockdown. An opportunity for volunteers to befriend individuals and families from the local area, who have experienced domestic abuse.
  • Building a trusting relationship, you will support them to make links within the wider community, to access local services and to prepare for a variety of appointments.
  • The training usually take place at our Mitcham office, once a week, over seven sessions, from 10am - 1pm. However during Covid-19 we will be training volunteers online. During the training it will be a necessary requirement for you to complete an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check (DBS) and 2 references will be sought.
  • We ask for a minimum of 2 hours volunteering per week between the hours of 9-5pm, Monday to Friday. Please note that if you are successful with your application and informal telephone interview you will be invited to attend the Helping Hands Project volunteer training. Volunteers for our HHP must be aged 18 yrs and over. .

What impact will this have?

  • Volunteers are expected to help increase the confidence and independence of individuals and families by:. ♣ offering emotional support and practical help. ♣ having an understanding of the effects of domestic violence on adults and children. ♣ visiting individuals and families in refuge accommodation or in the community.
  • ♣ emphasising the positive aspects of family life where things are going well. ♣ developing a relationship with the family including their children. ♣ encouraging the individual’s strengths and emotional well-being.
  • ♣ encouraging families to widen their network of relationships and for them to effectively. Access support and services available in the community. ♣ supporting families to attend appointments such as court, health, education ect.

Commitment

  • 2 hours per week.
  • Monday to Friday between 9am - 5pm.

Expenses

  • We pay relevant local travel expenses with receipts provided.

Background checks

  • A DBS check is required
