Organisation aims / mission / values

  • Our ambition is a future where every person with sight loss has the confidence and support they need to live their lives to the full.
  • OUR SERVICES. CustomEyes Books - We can produce books in large-print, tailor-made to suit your child’s eye condition. Books include fact and popular fiction titles, annuals and National Curriculum revision guides for home and school. Assistive Technology and Grants - Discover how assistive technology (also called access or adaptive technology) could help your child play and study – and how you can secure funding.
  • Sensory Equipment and Grants - Playing with sensory toys and apps will help improve your child's social, emotional and technological skills. Find out how we can help you choose and fund what your child needs. Family Events - A UK-wide programme of day and weekend family events where children with a visual impairment, and their siblings, can play with others who have similar conditions and parents can access information and help.
  • Education Support - Find out how to get specialist support that will meet your child’s needs to ensure they are supported at school, and that they attend the nursery, school or college that’s right for them. Family Support - Our trained and experienced family support officers are able to provide practical advice and emotional support from the moment your child is diagnosed with a vision impairment.
  • Mobility Training - Our Movement Matters training will give your child the confidence to independently navigate the world around them safely, with lifelong orientation and mobility skills. Guide Dogs for Children and Young People - A guide dog could offer significant benefits to your child, including increased confidence, self-esteem, independence and mobility. Buddy Dogs - We believe that a dog can make a remarkable difference in any child’s life by fostering a sense of responsibility and companionship through the human/animal bond.
  • Sighted Guiding Service - My Guide, our free sighted guiding service, helps promote freedom and independence for people with a vision impairment. We also offer support in the form of guiding training for your friends and family. Technology - Find out more about how technology can enhance your life, from complex sound-based technology to iPhone accessibility features. Guide Dogs for Adults - There are over 4,950 guide dog owners in the UK. If you are blind or partially sighted, a guide dog could change your life. Find out how we can help you get out and about.

How we deliver these aims

How we spend your money •£5 can support a working guide dog for a day •£25 can buy a white harness, the iconic symbol of a fully qualified guide dog •£95 can buy a Training School Kit for a guide dog trainer who teach pups the specialist skills they will need to become a qualified guide dog. •£140 can buy a Starter Kit for a new guide dog owner containing everything they need to start a life with their new guide dog.

Who benefits from our work

Despite the devastation caused by sight loss, 70% of adults receive no support within the first 12 months of diagnosis, and are likely to encounter poor education, high unemployment, depression, loneliness and financial insecurity throughout their lifetime. Childhood sight loss is on the increase. There are around 35,000 children and young people living with a vision impairment in the UK. Some 80% of a child’s learning takes place using vision, and every day they go without support can affect their development.
