What will I be doing?

  • Support gardening session leaders to deliver inclusive gardening workshops alongside SHP clients. All sessions are supervised by at least one member of SHP staff. Sessions typically run between 2 and 3 hours, and will involve a range of tasks such as watering, weeding, seed sowing, some heavy duty physical activities (such as digging, lawn mowing), harvesting produce. You will be supporting participants with a range of knowledge and abilities to carry out these activities You will be working alongside SHP clients who may have a range of support needs such as drug or alcohol dependence or use, mental health needs, access needs, learning disabilities and physical disabilities, and language barriers. Your role is to facilitate their engagement and enjoyment of the garden space.

What impact will this have?

  • About SHP and Opportunities/Gardening Project We are Single Homeless Project (SHP), a London -wide charity working to prevent homelessness and help vulnerable and socially excluded people to transform their lives. The Gardening project comes under our Opportunities programme banner. The Opportunities programme provides safe, flexible and inclusive ways for people to nurture their personal wellbeing and development, breaking down stigma and isolation and supporting recovery through involvement in learning. Spending quality time in the garden can have enormous benefits for mental wellbeing, personal development and recovery, and we are excited to launch many of these asmicro -farm food growing spaces. As well as offering the chance to learn practical skills, taking part in group gardening sessions helps people gain confidence, reduce their isolation, develop their social and communication skills and prepare for living independently.
