What will I be doing?

  • Assisting the instructor in setting the room and distributing exercise equipment.
  • Registering and making new customers feel welcome: taking the attendance register and collecting fees at the beginning of class.
  • Assisting participants with their coats and other belongings, helping them to their chairs, and placing walking aids within reach when necessary.
  • Sitting with and ensuring participants are comfortable should they need to rest during class.
  • Helping an individual proceed through the programme, showing encouragement, advise and support under the guidance of the class leader.
  • Waiting with participants after class for them to be picked up, if necessary.

What impact will this have?

  • Evidence strongly supports the power of exercise for post-stroke patients, which combines aerobic exercises, strength training and flexibility exercises.
  • Research has identified that exercise has both positive physical and psychosocial effects for post-stroke patients.
  • Areas that can show improve over time include: cognition, memory, attention span, pain, sensation loss, psychological issues, and problems with mobility and balance.
  • Our volunteer team provide an invaluable level of support, by assisting, responding to needs and encouraging exercisers.
  • The WImbledon Guild Exercise Buddies volunteer team won the bronze award for Merton Volunteer Team of the Year at the 7th annual Merton Partnership Volunteer Awards in 2019.

  • Our volunteers don't need any particular qualifications or experience, just a passion for helping others. Any skills or interests you have may be useful so please let us know when you apply.

    If you have an interest in health, movement, dance, exercise or recovery, we hope you will find this role particularly rewarding.
  • Flexibility, patience, and the ability to work in a team are essential, as are having a sense of humour and lots of enthusiasm.

What else do I need to know?

  • Our activities usually take place in the mornings and/or afternoons during the week.
  • Exercise classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Expenses

  • We can reimburse travel and other out-of-pocket expenses, as agreed.

Training

  • Induction with Class Leader followed by opportunity to gain a few 'Taster Sessions'.
  • Full, accredited Safeguarding Adults training is available to complete.
  • Additional training runs on a continual basis, from disability awareness to mobility assistance training.
