What will I be doing?

  • The Food Chain runs a café based in Stepney Green. The café serves a daily lunch in a bright, airy, peaceful venue and is a place where people can come together as a community.
  • The Café Assistant helps the Café Manager with all elements of the food preparation for the lunch making sure it is ready to serve at 1pm.
  • Tasks include prepping, cooking, dishing up and serving, washing up and cleaning up the kitchen at the end of the meal.

  • Contributing to the welcoming nature of a safe shared space for people living with HIV
  • Providing a hot nutritious meal at a low cost for people in the community
  • Upholding The Food Chain's commitment to ensuring that people living with HIV should not face barriers to good nutrition
  • Working at part of a collaborative team (The Food Chain and Positive East) to provide holistic support and inclusive services for people living with HIV in the community

Commitment

  • Available to commit to one consistent weekday per week 10am to 3pm
  • Available for a minimum of 12 weeks

What else do I need to know?

  • Volunteers should have an interest in food and cooking! You don’t need to be a Master Chef but you do need to be able to have a
    basic level of cooking knowledge and able to read and understand written recipes and instructions.
  • Volunteers should be punctual, conscientious and have willingness to muck in and do whatever needs doing!
  • Due to the sensitive nature of working with people living with HIV an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is essential

Expenses

  • Travel expenses can be reimbursed upon provision of a receipt up to a maximum of the value of an off peak Oyster zone 1-6 travel card according to the volunteer's home address.
