What will I be doing?

  • Blether Buddy volunteers simply provide a friendly conversation over the phone at the same time each week. The role is to provide empathy and a patient listening ear, rather than provide answers, fix problems, counsel or give advice.
  • Volunteers also report back to the Coordinator at the end of each month on the number of calls made and the time they spend chatting to each other. Any concerns raised during the conversation about the clients general welfare are fed back as soon as possible.
  • Blether Buddies are required to attend an induction and any relevant training at our office in City Road. We also organise quarterly befriender meetings and volunteers are encouraged to attend at least twice a year.

What impact will this have?

  • The impact of dedicating this small amount of time on a regular basis really cannot be underestimated. Knowing someone is giving up their time to speak to them once a week, makes a huge difference to our clients' confidence and emotional well being, as the feedback below clearly demonstrates.
  • “My befriender is my lifeline, taking the monotony out of sitting between four walls” – Sandra
  • “There was a period where I was finding it really hard to cope with my health, my buddy made it much easier. Telephone befriending is an art and he has this in abundance, thank you, thank you very much”. – Brian
  • “I suffer from depression and my buddy always help to snap me out of my low moods” - Janice

Commitment

  • Blether Buddies phone our clients on a weekly basis, to offer a friendly chat and a listening ear. Phone calls tend to last between 15 and 30 minutes and are made from a quiet place at the volunteers’ home, workplace, or our office in City Road, at a time that is convenient to both client and volunteer.

  • Preferably, calls are made at the same time each week and if making calls from our office, volunteers will over time, increase the number of clients they speak to, up to a maximum of six per session.

Expenses

  • We cover any out of pocket expenses for travel incurred through volunteering, for attending interviews, training, social events etc.

Background checks

  • Other background checks are required
