What will I be doing?

  • Our Virtual Volunteers help us by recording short video clips about their job and answering written questions to tell children about their job and career path. Volunteers can also host a live 'virtual' I Can Be visit for our children via videoconferencing programs.
  • I Can Be's remote learning programmes inspire children and raise their aspirations by introducing them to the world of work. Our programmes also broaden children's horizons and encourage them to discover the breadth of opportunity around them. Our main programme is for girls aged 7–8 years old. Alongside our main programme we also run a smaller programme for boys (ICB Boys).
  • I Can Be Virtual Volunteers come from a wide range of sectors including hospitality, healthcare, skilled manual trades, science, academia, the arts, finance, technology and not-for-profit, among others.
  • We are looking for professionals who feel passionately about raising the aspirations of disadvantaged children and young people. Volunteers also need to be able to communicate with children – talking about their job in a clear and engaging way so that 7–8-year-old children can understand (such as using simple language and avoiding jargon). I Can Be Volunteers also need to be personable and enthusiastic, so that they can engage with and inspire children.

What impact will this have?

  • I Can Be Volunteers have the opportunity to inspire children, without leaving their home.
  • By helping us to produce content for our online remote learning programmes, our Virtual Volunteers have the chance to make a real difference to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who may have no experience of the Volunteer's job, organisation and sector.
  • Our remote learning programmes inspire children by introducing them to jobs and the world of work. We reach children in their homes, and aim to broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations.
  • By helping us to create content for our online programmes, I Can Be Virtual Volunteers help children to explore jobs they otherwise may never be exposed to, building their curiosity and confidence along the way.
