What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?
Low attainment on entry and a significant proportion of challenged and vulnerable families. Needs identified through early contact and home visits.
What actions did you take?
- Removed sets, streams and put aside 'ability'
- Removed notions of 'top, middle, bottom'
- Implemented structured, discursive feedback
- Crucially, we group the children according to their very-next-step learning need
- Next-step groups are fluid and flexible
- Structured, meaningful pupil progress conversations
- Most learning is 'guided' - in small groups with intensive feedback and short-term targets
- Implemented a nurturing, values-based approach based on Positive Regard
- All of the above feature in our through-school from EYFS upwards
- We work in this way with our partner school, Heathland - also a School for Success
