Smithy Street School

Consistently above national progress and achievement

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Children enter EYFS with limited English and very low baseline assessments. A very large underachieving pupil premium group across the school. Previous inconsistency in the quality of teaching.

What actions did you take?

Developed the overall quality of teaching through: highly skilled and supportive phase leaders, clear systems of accountability, high focus on personalised CPD, learning alongside experts (writing, science, ICT)

Interventions: Daily key-skills sessions, introduction of small group and individual tuition by class teachers in the afternoons.

Focused on enriching the curriculum: trips, high quality texts, cross curricular links, focus on Deeper Learning.

What were the outcomes?

Good and outstanding practice, consistently above national results in KS2. Our pupil-premium children outperform non-pupil premium children nationally.
