Newbury Park Primary School 2019/20

Curriculum design to inspire all pupils through contextualised learning opportunities

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

  • Developing pupils' oracy skills and in particular, linked to Reading and Writing.
  • Focus identified through assessment for learning practices and rigorous self-evaluation of the school's work.

What actions did you take?

  • Developing oracy across the school was identified as the number one key priority for the School Development Plan.
  • The development of pupils’ oracy skills also fed into individual teachers' Action Plans and was a key focus for staff appraisal.
  • The school developed an oracy framework through collaboration with a Local Authority network group and used this framework as a support for explicit teaching and learning in oracy.
  • We linked the framework to support the development of our inclusion strategy and creating and sharing whole school initiatives and ideas.
  • We tried different ideas and focused on those that worked well, for example the development of pupil voice and leadership through our Ambassadors for Change Programme and structured conversations with parents.

What were the outcomes?

  • Development and improvement in pupils’ confidence
  • Greater engagement in class
  • Progress in disadvantaged pupils’ reading (2.84) and writing (2.46)
