Melcombe Primary School

Engaging all children and raising aspirations

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Children could not see the value in what they were learning, which had a negative impact on their learning, progress and aspirations.

What actions did you take?

We researched Brain Based Learning and Visible Learning, and created a Teaching and Learning Model which incorporates these. Every lesson follows the same formula, including identifying what the children already know, which informs the learning objective. The children identify where the new skill they are learning fits into the ‘Big Picture’, which contextualises the learning, and they explore ‘What’s In It For Me?’ ensuring they understand the value of their learning. The children identify success criteria, which ensures that they are completing the task successfully. Each lesson consists of new learning and the teacher models the task to ensure the children have a sound understanding of how to apply the success criteria to the task in order to be successful.

What were the outcomes?

Children are more engaged in their learning, their rate of progress is increasing and aspirations have risen.
