Avoiding the gap rather than closing it.

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Low levels of literacy and oracy. Lack of personal and cultural capital.

What actions did you take?

Used an intervention model to ensure that gaps are closed before they can widen. We teach the 'core' well in order to improve the whole i.e. we don't teach lower prior attainers (LPAs) differently - we ensure that every child is taught well.

What were the outcomes?

  • Average scaled score for reading and maths for LPAs: 102.1 
  • 55% of LPAs achieved EXS (working at the expected standard) in reading, writing and maths.
