Allen Edwards Primary School 2018/19

Focused and thematic engagement for all learners

What problems were in your school and how did you identify them?

Children commencing school with low starting points. We needed to establish a means to provide rapid and sustained progress through a focused and engaging curriculum.

What actions did you take?

Through identifying needs and regular focused interventions, children were able to move their learning on at a much more rapid pace.

Misconceptions and misunderstandings were quickly identified and through afternoon "pick-up" sessions children ensured they understand the learning intentions for each and every lesson, even if they initially found things difficult.

Pupil progress meeting enabled teachers to identify need and develop intervention programs, so children have the opportunities to move their learning on and catch up with their peers. Engaging texts and a thematic curriculum were used to captivate the children's attention.

What were the outcomes?

From low starting points children made outstanding progress. The majority of learners left school achieving the age-related expectations.
