High Challenge for High Achievement: Building a Culture of Excellence
A culture of excellence in maths education across transition
The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham School Improvement Service used a Lesson Study approach to improve pedagogy around the primary-secondary transition in maths.
The project aimed to improve teacher understanding of pedagogy, curriculum and expectations of students' mathematics performance across the transition through using a Lesson Study approach to bring together teachers from both phases to build on each other’s strengths
Findings suggested that primary teachers benefited more than secondary teachers, but teachers in general reported increased self-confidence in their own practice and lesson design, which was validated by their peers.
The whole experience is definitely impacting my everyday teaching in class. My children have a more open attitude to maths
The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham was awarded further funding through the Subject Knowledge Hubs programme.
