Developing teachers resources and confidence to improve literacy levels of EAL pupils at KS2 and academic English at KS4.

Global Literacy Networks – The Key to Integration

The project ran in 4 Tower Hamlets schools. ‘National Strategy Literacy and Language Development’ Consultants trained 9 Literacy Champions who in turn trained 178 teachers in different faculties. Consultants worked with the Literacy Champions to develop cross-curricular literacy which included: lesson observations, partnership teaching, resource creation, whole school CPD, and evaluation of impact: interviews, and filming of lessons. Teachers involved developed 2000 resources, shared on a specially built website.

By the end of the project teachers felt nearly twice as confident in ‘delivering literacy in the mainstream classroom’ and developing language through cross-curricular working.

Pupil’s language and literacy improved significantly with three times as many using connectives, verbs, imperatives, positional prepositions, impersonal voice and layout.

Paired work, modelled writing and use of a more complex vocabulary gave students the confidence they were lacking and, by the end, the desire to compete, engage more, and try to outdo each other, in such a short period of time. I consider the project a great success, and wish I had done it for longer.
